Per the Montessori Method, adults are trained to closely observe the classroom and create an education plan unique to each individual. When further questions arise, we begin students in the Child Study Process. Child Study is a process that begins with a family meeting and involves expanding to a larger team approach to support the needs of the child. Child Study is different from the process for an Individualized Education Plan. It is an important step in recognizing the needs of the student from a holistic perspective, and Child Study is often always implemented prior to a Special Education referral – unless a child enters their program level with an already established IEP or 504 plan.
Typical members of a Child Study Team include family members, classroom guides, other program level guides, the Heads of School, and other members of school leadership. This way, IMA(P) can ensure that the student and family has a comprehensive team of individuals as a resource.
After observation, implementation of strategies and interventions, the team comes together to decide on pursuing an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Once referred to Special Education, the Child Study Team will continue to work in tandem with case managers and resources to best support the child.
